Student Assistant for the Permafrost Research Section, Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI), Potsdam, Germany

Background:

You will be working with the Permafrost Region Greenhouse Gases Group to create high-quality datasets from continuous near-real time data streams from the FluxWIN automated greenhouse gas chamber system in Siikaneva, Finland. You will help maintain and trouble shoot the data processing work flow and automate data processing of greenhouse gas flux measurements.

Tasks:

  • Maintain the data workflow with the remotely acquired continuous data stream
  • Further develop, trouble shoot and make the data processing script in Python bullet proof
  • Manage the processed data on a regular basis for e.g. half hourly and daily averages for easy regular quality control of the automated chamber system
  • Establish and automate quality control mechanisms e.g. email notifications when the data stream stops
  • Interact with AWI’s tech support and maintain the virtual engines and data storage infrastructure
  • Prepare data for integration with the AWI Data flow from Observation to Analysis & Archives (O2A) system

Requirements:

  • Currently enrolled as a University student in a data management-related field
  • Demonstrated data management skills such as creating workflows and documenting data processing for replicability
  • Experience working with Python programming language
  • Experience of the Jupyter Notebook environment is an advantage but not essential
  • Experience with the R environment is an advantage
  • Creative thinking and problem solving skills as well as good communication to non-programmers (scientists)
  • German and English knowledge
  • Ability and willingness to work in a team and with international groups

Location: The place of employment will be Potsdam.

Work time: 
The position will be for 10 hours/week and they offer flexibility in work schedule and work location. Full time remote work is possible.
